Getting rid of roaches is one thing. Keeping them out permanently is another. After years of helping clients create beautiful, functional living spaces, I have learned that the homes that never have pest problems are not necessarily cleaner than others. They are just set up differently. Here are the 10 habits and home adjustments that make your space genuinely uninviting to roaches.
1. Store Food Properly
Roaches are attracted to any accessible food source. Store all dry goods including flour, sugar, cereal and pet food in airtight glass or hard plastic containers. Cardboard boxes and paper bags are not sufficient. Roaches can chew through both.
2. Never Leave Dishes in the Sink Overnight
A sink full of dirty dishes is a five-star restaurant for roaches. Make it a habit to wash dishes before bed or at minimum rinse them and put them in the dishwasher. The combination of food residue and moisture is exactly what roaches are looking for.
3. Fix Leaks Immediately
Roaches need water to survive and are strongly attracted to moisture. A dripping faucet or slow leak under the sink can sustain a roach colony indefinitely. Fix any plumbing leaks as soon as you notice them and check under sinks regularly for moisture buildup.
4. Seal Gaps Around Pipes
Every pipe that enters your home through a wall is a potential roach highway. Seal gaps around pipes under sinks, behind appliances and where pipes enter through exterior walls using silicone caulk or expanding foam. This single step eliminates one of the most common entry points.
5. Install Door Sweeps
The gap under an exterior door is large enough for a roach to pass through easily. Install door sweeps on all exterior doors, particularly in kitchens and garages. This is especially important in apartment buildings where roaches travel between units through under-door gaps.
6. Declutter Regularly
Roaches love clutter. Stacked cardboard boxes, paper bags, old newspapers and unused appliances create exactly the kind of dark, undisturbed hiding spaces they prefer. Keep storage areas organized and avoid accumulating cardboard in particular, as it is a preferred nesting material.
7. Clean Behind and Under Appliances
The space behind and under your refrigerator, stove and dishwasher is one of the most neglected areas in any home and one of the most attractive to roaches. Pull appliances out and clean behind them at least twice a year. Remove the drip pan under the refrigerator and clean it regularly.
8. Take Out Trash Daily
Leaving garbage in your kitchen overnight provides a consistent food source for any roaches in the area. Use a bin with a tight-fitting lid and take it out every evening. Keep outdoor bins away from the exterior of your home.
9. Use Preventive Gel Bait
Even if you do not have an active infestation, applying a small amount of gel bait in key hotspot areas once every 30 days creates a barrier that eliminates any roaches that do enter before they can establish a colony. This is the same preventive approach professional pest control companies use on a monthly maintenance basis.
10. Inspect Second-Hand Items
Used furniture, appliances, boxes from warehouses and even grocery bags can carry roach eggs or adult roaches into your home. Inspect any second-hand items before bringing them inside, particularly upholstered furniture and cardboard boxes. Avoid storing cardboard boxes that came from food storage or warehouse environments.
The Bottom Line
Prevention is significantly easier and cheaper than treatment. These ten habits, adopted consistently, create a home environment that is genuinely hostile to roaches. Combined with periodic preventive gel bait application, they will keep your home roach free permanently.
